The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the apartment. David hummed as he flipped pancakes, the morning light painting the kitchen in warm hues. His partner, Sarah, was still asleep, her face relaxed. They’d just bought their dream home, and their future was secure. He could take his time with everything.

His commute to work was pleasant: a leisurely bike ride along the river. He waved to the familiar faces of his colleagues as he entered the office. His attitude was carefree.

During a lunch break conversation, he overheard snippets about a recently hired intern's starting salary. He felt a sudden, fleeting stab of... something. Then, he chuckled. It was just a job, after all. He was happy with his life and his plans, and quickly dismissed it.
